Many careers in Canada require proof of adequate hearing before you can be hired, licensed, or certified. Whether you’re applying for a new job, pursuing a pilot’s licence, or applying to the RCMP, a hearing test is often a required step in the process.
At HearCare Audiology, we provide hearing tests for occupational and pre-employment purposes. These screenings are different from the diagnostic hearing evaluations we perform for patients with hearing concerns or those being fitted for hearing aids. Occupational screenings are focused on providing the test results and documentation you need for an employer, licensing body, or government agency.
Pre-Employment Hearing Tests
Some employers require a hearing test as a condition of employment, particularly for positions where clear communication and auditory awareness are essential to workplace safety. A pre-employment hearing test can also establish a baseline of your hearing health at the start of employment.
We perform pre-employment hearing tests in our clinic. If your prospective employer has provided you with specific forms or testing requirements, bring them to your appointment.
Aviation Medical Hearing Tests
Pilots and air traffic controllers must meet hearing standards as part of their Civil Aviation Medical Examination. Depending on your circumstances, a hearing test from a clinic may be required as part of your aviation medical.
We provide hearing tests for aviation medical purposes and will supply you with an audiogram to bring to your examination.
RCMP Applicant Hearing Tests
Applicants to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police must meet hearing standards as part of the application process. We perform hearing tests for RCMP applicants and provide the results you need for your application.
We recommend booking your test early in the application process so that any issues can be identified well before your deadlines.
How Occupational Screenings Differ from Diagnostic Evaluations
A diagnostic hearing evaluation is a comprehensive clinical assessment used to identify the type, degree, and cause of hearing loss, often as a first step toward treatment or hearing aids. An occupational or pre-employment screening, on the other hand, is focused on determining whether your hearing meets a standard set by an employer or licensing body, and on providing the documentation you need.
If your occupational screening reveals signs of hearing loss, we can discuss next steps with you, including a full diagnostic evaluation if appropriate.
